pretty

4+2=6

In my mind, there are few things in life more wonderful than the appearance of a little pink plus sign. This time, I literally left the room, and came back five minutes later, certain that the positive test was only my imagination.

When people see our little family, they ask questions like, "When do you think you'll be ready for another one?" and "How far apart do you want the next one to be?"

At my very first appointment, the nurse examined me, and then said, "Hmmmm. Let's go ahead and do an ultrasound!"

I was so excited! What a treat! Most doctors make you wait months to have an ultrasound! She picked up the probe, squeezed that cold gel onto my little baby bump, and showed me this.

-"Do you see what I see?" she said.
-"Is that?"
-"Uh-huh. There are TWO."

I cried, a lot, and the nurse brought me tissues, and continued the ultrasound. Both babies had excellent heart rates and were measuring just right, and I watched them kick around for thirty minutes in absolute awe.

I drove directly from the doctor to Kyle's work. I was in such shock that I missed my own exit! I marched up the stairs, ultrasound pictures in hand, and told my sweet husband the most unbelievable news of his life.  We are THRILLED!

Since then, all I do is read. I can't fill myself with enough information to satisfy my curiosity for everything twin. There are the practical things, like, we need a new car, and a new place to live----and then there are the health things, like, I'm supposed to eat 3,500 calories a day, drink 1 gallon of water, and somehow consume 175 grams of protein, daily. They'll need two of some things, and can share others. There is a world of information that I've only scratched the surface of!

Meanwhile, I am sicker than a dog. The hormones involved in a twin pregnancy are no joke. Everyone we know and love has come to our aid, taking the girls for me, cleaning my house, bringing us meals, flying in from San Diego to nurse me back to health, babysitting so I can take a nap-- we have been showered with love and we are beyond grateful!

Come summertime, we will be a family of SIX.

Until Next Time

We flew out of Seattle at 5 pm on Christmas Eve, and arrived in San Diego just after 8 pm. Visits to San Diego are my favorite. I really like my family.

The girls got exactly one present from me and Kyle and 47 from my family members. This picture captures the morning perfectly----actually, it captures our entire visit perfectly----a room full of people staring at my girls in pure adoration.
It was a typical Christmas, with gourmet Hartwell food and a lot of boisterous company. Delicious, exhausting, and wonderful.

For my birthday, Kyle and I met up with our friends, the Adams, and spent an afternoon at the San Diego Zoo. Truth be told, the girls were more interested in playing with their long-lost-friends than looking at the animals. We missed them dearly!

To wrap up the birthday festivities, we had dinner at my favorite sushi restaurant. Kyle and Kerrisa are slightly less adventurous with their food than me and Jordan, but they each agreed to try one bite. This is a picture of Kyle "accidentally" dropping said bite on the floor. Next time, we'll give him a fork.

A cold front moved over San Diego while we were visiting, which means one thing to every San Diegan: SNOW in the mountains. London wanted to build a snowman, and Sierra really likes pie, so we caravanned up to Julian. Maeci built the snow woman while London threw snowballs at her, and accidentally knocked the head off several times. Elle ran around in circles, chatting, eating the snow, until her nap-time crash.

The week after Christmas, the beaches were quiet and peaceful. Uncle Noah spent the day with us in Coronado, digging, finding shells and sand dollars, and chasing seagulls. My girls ran up and down the coastline, holding Uncle Noah's hands.

Tasty!

Moo Time was the perfect end to a day spent in the California sun.

Taryn, OJ, and Maeci took London out for an afternoon. She loves to do activities with "grown-ups", and I love that they are so willing to make her feel special! They rented a surrey, and London sat on the front, in her little bike helmet, as happy as a three-year-old can be.

Our two weeks came to a close all too quickly. In an attempt to lift London's spirits, I asked her, "Who are you most excited to see in Washington?"
-"Taylor, and An Missa [Aunt Melissa]. And I want to listen to Taylor Sift in our car, too!"

Until next time, San Diego.

Is it Christmas yet?

I'm being completely serious when I say that this has been the longest month of my life. I am trying to enjoy it, go to parties, see Christmas lights, Elf on a Shelf, yada yada... I just want it to be Christmas Eve, so my whole family can be together in San Diego!

Now that we live in the Northwest, we have the option of doing this hilarious thing- cut down our own Christmas tree! Kyle has talked about his childhood memories of cutting down a tree since we were dating: a sleigh ride, hot chocolate, and the perfect tree on a hillside in the mountains. It seemed so romantic! In reality, we drove about five miles from our house, walked around for a few minutes, and I picked the tree like always. Kyle did look extremely manly cutting it down, hauling it and strapping it to our car.

Kyle carried the tree up three flights of stairs and set it on the tree stand. We fell to the floor, laughing. ------Have you ever seen Christmas Vacation? You know when they cut the bands and the tree is so enormous that the branches break the windows in their living room? Use that image as a reference point. I spent over an hour cutting all the branches down to size, and Kyle sawed two feet off the top, and it finally fit in our home!

Elle unpacking Christmas decorations
Just before Christmas, a friend of ours invited London over to her parent's house to go horseback riding. I thought she would be nervous and timid, but she got right on the horse. She rode in circles with the brightest smile on her face, striking up conversations with the horse and whoever was leading it.

London sat on Santa's lap for the first time this year. She was completely star-struck. Without looking him in the eye, she sweetly whispered, "I would like a trumpet." Santa laughed, told her to be a good girl, and handed her a tiny bag of M&Ms. Elle cried.

And Kyle and I went to his work Christmas party...

Christmas Sunday!

Is it Christmas yet?
